“The Meritorious One for the World’s Peace” awarded in Mexico
On April 6, 2008, Monterrey, N. L., Mexico, the city of mountains was dressed with Peace with the visit of Dr. William Soto Santiago.
Gathered with the purpose to pray for peace, representatives of different religions conducted a silent walk while holding their hands. The tour began at Ocampo and Zaragoza Streets in downtown Monterrey.
Reaching the Esplanade of Heroes, in front of the Governmental Palace, Jose Natividad Gonzales Parás, Governor of Nuevo Leon, greeted the religious leaders and crowd there present.
The Interreligious Council of Nuevo Leon bestowed the “Benemérito Mundial de la Paz” or “The Meritorious One for the World’s Peace” upon Dr. William Soto Santiago. Said title was given to Dr. William Soto Santiago by the Archbishop Francisco Cardenal Robles Ortega, the President of the Interreligious Council.
Representatives of different religious groups participated in this event. Rabbi Moishe Kaiman and Israel Diament represented the Jewish community; Mohamed llqaquen represented the Islamic community; Reverend Edelmiro Gonzalez represented the Evangelical community; Bishop Marcelino Rivera Delgado represented the Anglican community; Elder Jorge Rojas Ornelas represented the Mormon community; Enrique Garcia represented the Buddhist community, Edilberto Ramos Salinas represented the Hindu community and Eduardo Perez de Leon represented the Baha’i community.
When the moment came to pray for peace, everyone gathered held a moment of silence, then each of the religious leaders lit a candle and gave words of blessings.
At the end of the event, as a symbol of peace, the religious leaders released white doves into the air.
