The importance of sport in the formation of a culture of peace is being increasingly recognized worldwide by international organizations, governments, academic authorities and society. On November 3, 2003, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the UN Resolution entitled "Building a Peaceful and better world through Sport and the Olympic ideals.”
The purpose of this resolution is to urge state members to encourage sport as a tool to promote peace, dialogue and reconciliation in conflict situations during and after the Olympics.
