Rio de Janeiro embraces the celebration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, January 25th, 2009

The strong images of the Holocaust show the Power of prejudice.

The beach of Copacabana, the princess of the sea, heart of Rio de Janeiro, was the hostess of a photographic exhibition about a historical event: the Holocaust. It was an effort to remember a past which cannot be denied.

To AMISRAEL, the concept of Holocaust goes way beyond the atrocity committed against the Jewish people, but it is the most emblematic event of all forms of racial, political and social discrimination, or even an attempt to legitimate the violence towards individuals or groups.

The event was based on the “Declaração Conjunta” (Joint Declaration), a document signed by the presidents of Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, at Costa de Sauípe, Brazil, Last December 16th. The document rules against all forms of discrimination and racism, and emphasizes the need for raising awareness of the young generation about the crimes committed in the past, in the name of prejudice.

With sentences like: “Recalling the past is the Best way of understanding the present” and “Those Who refuse to learn from their mistakes are bound to commit them again”, AMISRAEL exposed real facts to hundreds of citizens Who observed the exhibition, asked questions and expressed their solidarity to the families of the victims and their support to the work of the organization.

Eng. Erlix Estevez and Hassan El Gamal, president of the Brazilian Palestinian Movement for Peace

One of the highlights of the event was when Hassan El Gamal, president of the Brazilian Palestinian Movement for Peace, Who works for peace between Palestine and Israel, congratulated the volunteers for their initiative. He proposed joining forces between the two institutions to fight for peace in the conflict region itself.

The delegate of AMISRAEL in Rio, Engineer Erlix Estevez shook his hand and declared: “If we add our common desire to fight for peace to the solidarity of such pacifist people as the people from Rio, we will reach this goal that the nations of Palestine and Israel needs so badly.”
