In the “Salón O’Higgins” of the Ministry of International Relations in Santiago de Chile, the celebrations of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust took place, on Tuesday, January 27th, 2009. The date was chosen by the UN General Assembly – in its resolution 60-7 of November 1st, 2005 – because it was on this day, in 1945, that the allied troops freed the largest extermination camp of the Nazi regime: Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland.
The Ambassador of Israel, Mr. David Cohen, the sub-secretary of the Ministry of International Relations, Mr. Juan Pablo Lira, Senator Jaime Naranjo, the Diplomatic Board, and Directors of the Ministry of International Relations, Jewish community authorities and Amisrael Delegates and volunteer were present at the ceremony.
Six candles, representing the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, were lit by Jewish community authorities, Holocaust survivors, government authorities and representatives of different religious groups.

The audience was moved listening to the Partisans Hymn, performed by the AMISRAEL volunteers.
Apart from the ceremony, the authorities were invited to attend the exhibition “Righteous Austrian”, which pays a tribute to the people who exercised the values of solidarity and civil bravery to help those persecuted by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust.
At the end of events, children handed cards in the shape of doves, as a symbol of peace.
