El Salvador joins the celebrations of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

AMISRAEL El Salvador celebrated the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust and the prevention of crimes against humanity with a ceremony in the National Museum of Anthropology David J. Guzmán,

The date reminds us of the liberation of the Jewish extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland, tragically famous for producing the highest number of deaths during the Nazi Holocaust. Due to its symbolic and emotive load, this date was chosen to keep alive the  memory of the 6 million Jews, as well other victims (anyone who opposed Nazism and Fascism, such as Spanish republicans, homosexuals, gypsies and physically challenged people) murdered in concentration camps.

Several personalities were present at the event, among which the Ambassador of Israel, Mr. Mattanya Cohen; the representative of the United Nations in El Salvador, Mr. Richard Barathe; the president of the National Museum of Anthropology, Mr. Gregorio Belos Suazo; Rabbi Pablo Berman; Holocaust survivor Mr. Pierre Wolf; president of the Shalom Club, Mrs. Alicia Nuñez and members of the diplomatic board of El Salvador and local Jewish community.

“ We gather here today to celebrate this international memorial day, to remember what was the Shoah, in a moment in which the world forgets what has happened, in which Holocaust deniers get front pages” highlighted Rabbi Pablo Berman.

During the event, Pierre Wolf, Holocaust survivor, shared his story and talked about the terrible moments he lived in the Nazi concentration camps. “I’d rather say I don’t have hard feelings against the Germans, against such horrifying acts. Who was to imagine there would be Gas chamber? No one”  he analyzed.

In his turn, the UM representative, Richard Barethe, read the message of the Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon.

The event was organized to remember the martyrs of yesterday and spread harmony among men – the best inheritance for the new generations. The political and religious leaders, as well as the defenders of Human Rights all agree that this is the lesson which must be learned from the Shoah, the lesson which will contribute to strengthen peace around the world.
