Haiti receives humanitarian aid
The Agents of Peace from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico deliver donations in different cities.
Port au Prince 23/01/2010
The devastating earthquake which hit Haiti on January 12th, left a death toll of at least 120,000 people, and the number of people affected might reach 3 million, half of which are now homeless.
However, for the earthquake survivors the nightmare is not over, for they now face new dangers: the looting and violence which demonstrate the lack of security.
After several days of intensified reconstruction duties, part of the country tries to resume daily activities, yet the scarcity of food and water is an issue of concern to the people and it has made governments, organizations and institutions around the world intensify their efforts to provide more assistance to this population. For this reason, the Agents of Peace continue their campaign of solidarity for the victims.
On January 23rd, a committee of volunteers from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic traveled to Haiti taking with them donations which were collected in these two countries. Non perishable food, first aid supplies, toiletries, tents, blankets, water, clothing and cash, were part of the aid handed out in different cities, including: Cabaret, La Gonave, Boc-Banique, Thomassique, Jacmel , Saint Marc, Port-au-Prince and in the community of Carrefour which was the epicenter of the earthquake and is where Amisrael placed one of its shelters.
The Mayor of Carrefour, Mr. Lundi Benel, asked the volunteers to continue supporting the victims who not only suffer from lack of food but also by the absence of family members lost in the tragedy.
In their turn, Amisrael delegate in Haiti, Mr. Mercredi Lucner, volunteers Obed Martinez, Pedro Antonio Emanuelli from Puerto Rico and Ramón Castillo from the Dominican Republic, said that the solidarity campaign will be extended and announced that in the upcoming weeks, Agents of peace from Chile, Venezuela, Argentina and the United States will deliver their humanitarian aid.
